Also, we wanted to visit Bellewood Acres, a beautiful property with apple and pear orchards, a café, bakery and a distillery. There is something to do for everyone in the family. It was early October and it was apple picking season. Bellewood acres grows a lot of variety of apples and when we visited, they were harvesting, honey crisp and pink ladies, gala and some more. We picked a lot of Honey crisp and Pink ladies. They were organic apples and we were told we could just pluck them off the trees and eat them. Those apples were so sweet and juicy.
That is when I had such a surplus of apples lying at home, I thought of using them in our oatmeal. Apple pie flavors in breakfast oatmeal, its genius. Healthy yet feels indulgent! This is a great make ahead breakfast. It has become our favorite way of eating Oatmeal. The recipe below is made in an instant pot. I usually make this on a Sunday, and we eat it through the week. The Steel cut oats do tend to thicken up while sitting around and absorb all the water. Every time we want to eat this, I scoop it out in my cereal bowl, l and I add some liquid to make it to eating consistency and warm it up or eat it cold. Feel free to add any liquid of your choice, you can add almond milk or any other milk of your choice. I love to add some walnuts and raisins on top just before eating. You can also add any sweeter of your choice like brown sugar, honey or maple syrup.
A warm bowl of this apple pie steel cut oatmeal is the best breakfast for when the temperature starts to dip. It’s a comforting bowl of goodness!!
Total time – 30 mins
Active time – 5 mins
Yields – 5-6 servings
INGREDIENTS
- 1 cup steel cut oats
- 3 cups water
- 2-3 apples peeled and diced any variety you prefer, I have made these with Honey Crisp, Pink ladies and Gala
- 1 ½ tsp cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp nutmeg
- 1/4 tsp ground ginger
- ¼ tsp salt
INSTRUCTIONS
- Combine all the ingredients in your Instant Pot (or any other kind of pressure cooker). Lock the lid and seal the vent. Select Manual function and set the timer for 5 minutes. It will take 10 to 12 minutes for the pressure to build.
- After your 5 minute cooking time, let the pressure release naturally. This usually takes 15 minutes. Open the lid and enjoy the aromas. Stir and remove pot carefully with oven mitts.
- At this point you can eat it or cool and store it. It’s a great make ahead recipe.
- I like to add some nuts and dried fruits for topping but that is optional.
